RESULTS: DE WALLEM HOSTEL

THEME: Amsterdam is a city with many identities. The largest urban development took place in the seventeenth century,  in the period known as theGolden Age, when the Dutch capital became one of Europe’s commercial hubs of major interest. The five semicircular canals that surround the urban fence have always played a dominant role logistically and in terms of landscape. Besides the rivers there is much more: the bike paths make up a useful green Connection Network, museums and cafes line the streets of art and culture, green fields and windmills characterize the suburban areas. No shortage of contemporary architecture and transgression places, the red zone, much frequented by foreigners. This heterogeneity poses Amsterdam among the most visited tourist destinations of the Old Continent: tourism is one of the most developed areas, we intend to think of a traveler service hostel. TheBeursplein is a border area between the neighborhood De Wallen and Nieuwe Zijede, a short walk from Dam Square. In this unresolved urban space we want to imagine a receptive structure, on hostel for turist that wil be to connect with main attractions of the city.

FIRST PRIZE: Fernando Vieira (PORTUGAL)

…..the tall trees are perfectly integrated to the monumentality of the existing buildings, covering the public area making it cozy open space. The square is a popular gathering place for the community, it was necessary to examine whether interrupt this continuity with a compact volume. Amsterdam Hostel is developed under the street level so as not to affect the current use pattern. The central courtyard is a place of connection: served by suspended walkways become a link between the upper square and underground spaces, it performs the sorting of tracks and allows light and air to penetrate naturally. The entire project is looking for a balance between the hostel and the square, the right blend of form and function is an element of rationality programmatic essential…..

SECOND PRIZE: Patryk Galinski_Marta Dabrowska (POLAND)

….the most iconic element of Beursplein is the history. The three surrounding buildings have facades facing the square and expose the monumentality of their volumes. The hostel aims to provide a new space creating different perspectives: the central square is maintained but the new block – transparent and light – closes the short side of delimiting the audience empty. The ground floor of the building, open and penetrable, invites people to enter while the terraces on the upper levels become vertical gardens for the exclusive use of housing. The structure creates a third façade capable of animating the life of the district around the clock. The ceramic coating on the facades represent the cultural diversity of Amsterdam, a gesture of welcome that embodies the architecture to the community…..

THIRD PRICE:  José Carlos Fernàndez Grandez_Ximena Bisbal Garcìa-Dyer (PERU’)

…..the proposal aims to connect people with urban dynamics trying to simplify the use of the busy square made from a non-programmatic systemic design. The building gives way to the front of the church: the new pedestrian path cuts the area offering a direct connection between the new and the pre-existence. The glass facades lighten the volume consists of a thick red brick structure used as a clear sign of adherence to local building technique. The pitched roofs that animate the hostel blocks draw an irregular profile, refer to the pitched roofs used for buildings arranged along the canals of Amsterdam. Double height and large windows provide a visual connection between the common spaces and the outdoor areas…..

…..the building is conceived as a large sculpture: the treatment of the facades with different textures, colors, patterns and transparency, combined with the effects of natural and artificial light, tries to create different perceptions of the building during the day. The central void is a link that opens up various views of the square. The functions are divided into four main areas: the basement intended for bicycle parking, the first level where are located shops and restaurants, on the second level laboratories and the two upper floors of the apartments are located. Amsterdam Hostel is an organism that live h24, imperceptibly makes the boundary between public and private spaces…..

MENTION: Thais de Freitas (BRAZIL)

…..Smart Hostel is a building that integrates multiple for communication systems: the main idea is to create a dynamic organization capable of improving the quality of life by using technology to promote the efficiency of services and to meet the needs of guests. Starting from the concept of community, Smart Hostel is a place to have fun, to meet people and share ideas. Imagine a universal space consisting of low-cost elements, containers, reusable and easy to find. The infinite possibilities of assembly between units generate dynamic architecture, a closed and empty system that alternates public and private areas…..

…..the architecture should not celebrate itself but enhancing the history of places. The design intent was to imagine a structure that dialogues with the topography of the site and the urban fabric. The building is organized around a courtyard permeable, a filter between the square and the first level of the residential complex made easily accessible by the flows coming from outside. The hostel should be easily accessible, becoming a reference point for the whole urban area. The Cor-ten reinterprets the red brick used in local building traditions, and is approached exposed concrete of the remaining surfaces, gesture of opposition in search of a new identity…..
