THEME: Venice is the city of the Doges and canals, for centuries has been one of the leading maritime hubs in the Mediterranean. The small islands of the Venice are divided by 150 rivers and connected by about 150 bridges. The Rialto Bridge connect the two side of Great Canal and it is one of the most recognized icons along with the San Marco bell tower. The symbol architectures represent Venice as the ancient crafts still practiced today: glass processing, the art of paper mache and implementation fine fabrics are a thriving tradition that the artisans operating in the three sectors have never abandoned. We want to imagine in Cannaregio district – a place middle between the train station, the Grand Canal and the island of Murano – the Artisan School, a laboratory where train the teachers of tomorrow. Contemporary architecture located in the heart of the historical center to form an ideal bridge between the past and present.

…..the school of Venice wants to channel a means of connection between the trades dedicated to local crafts. In addition to the main base, with all the workshops and support areas, floating boats are provided useful to link the complex with the shops located in the lagoon. The building becomes a reinterpretation of the ancient agora where local producers converge for sharing information and knowledge. A public square welcomes students and visitors by offering a space for exhibitions and exchanges of ideas. The workshop, arranged in the center of the project and protected by glass panels, are visible to all those who are passing through. The ramps act as a connection between the various levels and revolve around the central square. While students can access directly to the studio, visitors are led directly to the first floor where you find the reception and the library. The metal structure of the building allows a future reversibility and unobtrusive work of the yard….
SECOND PRIZE: Antonio Posadino (ITALY)
…..the building is intended as a reference point and meeting place for artisans of Venice, a place to pass on their craft through workshops and workshops. The volume contains spaces dedicated to work, terraces and gardens become a space of meeting and resting onto which the different levels. On the ground floor the reception becomes the first host with access for those coming from the ground and those arriving from the channel. On the reception space looms the sloping wall of the auditorium: with its profile draws a directionality that visually unites the calle to rio and creating with the overhang a covered space to moor boats and gondolas. On the upper floors of the laboratories and the private garden terrace are located. The complex is a container to be furnished with artifacts produced in its laboratories….
THIRD PRIZE: Alberto Marzi (ITALY)
…..the Venetian architecture has always interacted with the light, the insistence of the openings on the fronts of buildings, just talk about the special relationship that this city has the most immaterial physical element. Even contemporary opera needs to be made of light. School crafts is a semi-transparent envelope, it is defined by a frame of innocent tubes covered by a metal mesh grille polychrome. Between the inside of the closed functional areas and the outer skin creates a logistical synergy. The building is grafted like a regular block parallel to the boundary wall preserved as testimony of the past. The reception is on the first floor, the auditorium – with a telescope foyer of the city – it is the second, the classrooms are arranged on the top level. The outer skin becomes a call to the frames that surround the city buildings still awaiting restoration by important symbol of artisan school of future regeneration….

…..the work of a craftsman goes beyond the object, it becomes a collective memory that becomes part of the local history. The story is an essential part of the project: keep the existing wall meant not to alter the traces of the past in search of a new value. But architecture, as stated by Luis Kahn, has become the place of immeasurable, the place to indefinite emotions take shape in a subjective way. This intention is expressed in the approach followed design: the auditorium is the space in which to transmit the knowledge, the glass facade symbolizes a desire to trade without borders, while the load-bearing structure in steel undresses, provocatively, the culture of the burdens of history . Only through a new plan to contemporaneity it can reshape places….

…..the building includes a courtyard with trees and plants that evoke the tranquility of the historic courtyards scattered in the city. The project was influenced by the study of the typical Venetian facades repeating so tight openings that ensure a good interior lighting. The theme of the fronts permeability has been reinterpreted through a double skin with copper perforated panels forming the outer casing. The main entrance on Calle Venier gives access to the reception, thanks to its shape and its splayed overlooking the courtyard, he leads the visitor’s gaze towards the spiral ramp that winds around the elliptical courtyard. The ramp, designed as an exhibition walk, connecting all functions. Internal windows contrasts with the uniformity of burnished copper facade, the material chosen for the surface color that integrates well with the type local housing…..

…..the goal is to create a building to form, function and functional layout and material choices can improve the existing framework. The outer shape is clean and the internal paths follow a search of succession and relationships. The premises on the ground floor became the place of connection with the audience while the classrooms and laboratories, arranged on the upper levels, are placed in the search for greater privacy. The exterior design, represented with linear geometry, allows to put it in the discreet intervention for not sharply alter the morphology of the site. The red brick building at the bottom of reinterpreting the local building tradition, the windows to cut the facades on the upper levels allow light to penetrate into the interior, and artificial lighting to illuminate the street. The visual connection between private and public spaces become an attraction for the local community with which this new architecture is proposed to dialogue…..
